🛷 Speed and Spectacle: The Thrill of Carros de Cesto/Tobogã do Monte (Monte Wicker Sledge/Toboggan) Rides

Ever imagined racing down the streets of a picturesque city in a wicker basket? That’s exactly what you’ll experience with Monte Toboggan Rides in Funchal, Madeira's charming capital.

This centuries-old tradition began as a practical way for locals to descend the steep hills of Monte to Funchal swiftly. Today, it remains one of Madeira’s most thrilling attractions.

On these rides you are seated in a wicker sled, with two expert drivers, known as Carreiros do Monte, guiding you down a two-kilometer route. The ride can reach speeds of up to 30 miles per hour, blending exhilaration with stunning views. 

These rides are not just characterized by their speed but also by the history, craftsmanship of the sleds and the skill of the Carreiros, who steer and brake with rubber-soled shoes.

It’s a piece of Madeira culture in action, combining tradition with excitement, a rarity in today’s commercialized tourism world.

Despite the thrill, these rides are well-regulated and safe. The Carreiros are highly skilled and the routes are monitored.

All this creates a blend of trust, culture and the timeless excitement of a ride that’s been delighting visitors since the 19th century.

🪽 The Enchanting Cascata dos Anjos

Cascata dos Anjos or "Angels Waterfall" is one of Madeira’s highlights.

Nestled in the lush landscape of the island, this waterfall may not be the tallest but it offers a unique and tranquil experience.

Imagine a secluded spot where water cascades over moss-covered rocks into the middle of the road. 

There is a narrow costal road crossing the flow of water, creating a rare experience, where you can safely drive through, a natural car wash or walk and stand right in the middle of the way of the water and be reinvigorated by the fresh cool mountain cascade.

Cascata dos Anjos is not a tourist hotspot but a hidden treasure requiring a small effort to reach.

Here, you can enjoy the scenery from the waterfall, the cliffs and the immense Atlantic Ocean all in one spot. 

💦 Levada do Moinho to Levada Nova: The Hike of Surprises

Madeira’s Levadas, irrigation channels that provide scenic hiking trails, are famous in the island.

🌋 Natural Swimming Pools in Porto Moniz

In Porto Moniz, you’ll find natural swimming pools formed by volcanic lava and filled with crystal-clear ocean water, offering a unique experience.

The water here is incredibly clear, allowing you to see right to the bottom and refreshingly cool.

These pools are surrounded by rugged lava rocks, combining natural beauty with modern convenience.
