This coastline includes the protected area of Parque Natural do Sudoeste Alentejano e Costa Vicentina (Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park), where the preserved nature has a strong and wild character, creating landscapes of breathtaking majesty.

This is our recommended itinerary for exploring the Sudoeste Alentejano and Costa Vicentina, heading southward. All the beaches we will present are part of the Sudoeste Alentejano and Costa Vicentina Natural Park.

🏝️ Praia da Ilha do Pessegueiro in Porto Covo
Porto Covo is a charming fishing village, known for its picturesque whitewashed houses with blue trim and cobbled streets, offering a quaint and inviting atmosphere.
Porto Covo’s coastline is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentina Coast Natural Park, making it a protected area, ensuring pristine natural landscapes and rich biodiversity.
Visitors can enjoy fresh seafood in local restaurants, explore nearby hidden coves and experience the relaxed pace of life.

The Praia da Ilha do Pessegueiro (Ilha do Pessegueiro Beach) is the Porto Covo’s precious gem.
It is characterized by its golden sands and clear blue waters, making it a perfect spot for swimming, sunbathing and water sports.
Also, it is less crowded than other tourist spots, providing a peaceful and serene environment for visitors.
The beach is situated directly opposite Ilha do Pessegueiro (Pessegueiro Island), offering stunning views of the island, where you can spot the ruins of a Roman fish salting factory and the 16th-century Forte de Santo Alberto (Santo Alberto Fort).

☀️ Praia do Malhão
The Praia do Malhão (Malhão Beach) is the epitome of wild and untouched beauty.

🐚 Praia do Almograve
Praia do Almograve (Almograve Beach) is a beach of contrasts. On one side, you’ve got rocky outcrops and dramatic cliffs. On the other, wide sandy stretches perfect for sunbathing and beach games.
It’s kind of a secret treasure, often overshadowed by more famous spots, but that’s part of its appeal.

The town of Sagres, literally the Southwest corner of the country, itself is rich in history. It’s where Henrique, o Navegador, Príncipe de Portugal (Henry the Navigator, Prince of Portugal) launched his explorations in the 15th century that helped develop Madeira and reach Sierra Leone.
You can visit the Fortaleza de Sagres (Sagres Fortress) that offers panoramic views of the Atlantic and a glimpse into Portugal’s seafaring past.

🎒 Secret Hiking Trail
The Trilho dos Pescadores da Rota Vicentina (Rota Vicentina’s Fishermen’s Trail) is a must for any Costa Vicentina visitor.
Running parallel to the coastline, it offers dramatic views, stretching over 226 kilometers from São Torpes near Sines all the way to Lagos in Algarve.
This trail passes through most coastal villages and beaches that you have read in this post and it’s perfect for both long treks and shorter stages.
The Fishermen’s Trail offers solitude and a deep connection to nature.
Unlike crowded trails, this path allows you to immerse yourself in the tranquility of the landscape. The sound of waves becomes your natural soundtrack, and you may even spot rare wildlife along the way.
There are also small circular trails that you can do in a specific area for a few hours, a good way to spend part of the day doing something that breaks the daily routine.
